Truancy Problems… In Kindergarten?
Last night I was laying in bed watching the 11pm news, like I usually do, when a story came on about one Connecticut town fighting a huge truancy problem.
In the kindergarten classes.
No joke. I was beyond confused. I thought truancy would be an issue for high school, or even middle school. But never in a million years would I think there would be a problem with kindergarten!
In the news report, which is focusing on the city of New Britain, they explained :
According to New Britain Public Schools, nearly 1/3 of kindergartners are chronically absent, that means more than 10 unexcused absences.
But the problem isn’t with the children cutting class, or skipping school. The problem is the parents not getting their children to school. From the sound of the article originally it placed blame on the kids, 4, 5, and 6 year old’s clearly aren’t responsible enough to handle getting themselves up, and to school on a daily basis.
I hate getting up in the morning just like most people, including my own kindergartener who actually himmed and hawwed as I pulled him out of bed this morning, but I wouldn’t let him get away with curling back up in bed. Even though I wanted to!
In the first couple days of school Camden would wake up and say “I’m sick” as he squeezed out a pathetically fake cough. Not flying in my book.
If children are starting their educational career on this foot, what are they going to do when it comes to high school? Where will they end up in life?
Starting their education off on the right foot is so important!
Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.
