Tips for BlogHer Newbies!

I am going to BlogHer this year. I can’t pass it up since it is in New York City. The last time I attended the conference, it was amazing. There is just so much a blogger can learn. Plus who doesn’t want to meet all the bloggers you have made connections with over the years?

Well and meet new bloggers. At BlogHer 2010 when I became the Wine Fairy I also met several awesome bloggers I talk to almost daily still. It is like a sisterhood. A great sisterhood. And once a year we all get together to learn and party.

With an emphasis on party. It is always a good time.

Now when I went to BlogHer 2010 it was like baptism by fire. I had no idea what I was getting into. I hopped onto the train with my Dad, did a day in the city with him and my friend Julie and then I was on my own.

I have to say to start with… BlogHer is overwhelming. Especially if you are the new kid on the block. I was SO new. I had no idea what I was getting into. I had no idea how BIG the conference was.

I put together some tips to help the newbies survive the conference, because I learned the hard way.

My biggest suggestion is bring a buddy! Someone to pair up with and do the conference with. It makes life easier.  On day one of the conference I paired up with a friend I met up at the conference and was to thankful to do everything from the Newbie Breakfast to the expo hall with her. I think she was in the same boat so it was good to take it all in together.

Second? Make sure you have a party buddy as well! There are exclusive parties all over the city. If anything it is someone to share a cab with, but better yet it will keep you safe, and from gallivanting all over New York City by yourself, especially if you don’t know your way around!

Third – take advantage of the sessions. Whatever you want to expand your knowledge on… If it is technology, sit in on the technology sessions. If you want to work on building your community or brand, make sure you look up what they have on that topic. If you are looking for Blog Photography 101 – go to the photography sessions. Remember, the main reason the vast majority of bloggers are spending the money on a ticket and hotel for BlogHer is to learn.

Fourth – Be friendly! Network, and make connections!
In 2010 I made tons of awesome connections, which in turn landed me on Babble! Be yourself, be genuine, and prefect your elevator pitch! You never know who you are doing to run into!

Lastly – Have a good time! Don’t take everything too seriously. For a lot of us this is the only time this year we are going to be away from our kids for a little bit. Live it up!  But remember… there are a lot of cameras at BlogHer… Don’t do anything you don’t want on the internet.

In 2010 I took on the persona of the Wine Fairy. But we kept it clean! Nothing I wouldn’t want on the internet and lots of free wine for all! It was a good time and I still have people that remember that. I actually made some great friends over it as well.

I am going to do a packing list as well to share some great things that most of us may not remember to bring to the conference as we get closer to August!
