The Reality of Abortion in America

If you have been a reader here for long, you will know I am a pretty strong pro-choice advocate. For those of you who are new I will spell it out very simply with two sentences.

I am pro-choice, not pro-abortion – I think all women should be able to make all their own medical decisions, no matter what.

I am a mother of three, one child which was very unplanned and unexpected, abortion was never and has never been an option for me.

Now that we have that out of the way, yesterday I caught an interesting post on Cafemom’s blog The Stir. I typically try and avoid it like the plague but Jeanne Sager is an amazing blogger and she is one of the only writers there I will read.

She covered a story about a woman who documented her own abortion and made it into a website/blog called This is my Abortion. (Just a warning… the website can be considered a trigger, or graphic, so click on the link with digression.)

I am not happy that this woman had to go through the process of having an abortion, but as an advocate for truth I am glad that she wrote and shared unbiased and real documentation of an abortion at the typical 6 weeks gestation. That is the time frame in which 80+% of abortions take place.

If you do not have any desire to see the graphic nature of the reality of a 6 week abortion, click away now.  While I don’t find the photo to be graphic, there are some who may.

The problem I have with many of the advocates which identify themselves as Pro-Life is the lying. Standing out in front of abortion clinics or at marches with these fake pictures of “aborted fetuses” claiming they are real for dramatic effect. Or to harass and bully women into making the choices they feel are morally right.

The fact of the matter is American women have rights even though they have been under extreme attack the past couple years.

Maybe the government around the country should start focusing more on the economic mess we are in instead of what women are doing with their wombs, vaginas, and morals?

Just a thought.

I can put my soap box away now.

  1. Very nice piece, that really does highlight my stance. I’m not Pro-abortion, but I am pro-LIFE. Meaning everyone’s life who is at stake in the situation. And there are a lot of pitfalls in our system for the lives of women who choose to have children and how they are given access to prevent themselves from having children, if that is their choice.

  2. As you know, Danielle, I am Pro-Life (as in very against abortion), but I’d like to congratulate you for standing up for your beliefs in a way that allows people to add their opinions to yours or even stand against you if they choose.

To me, it’s a disturbing pic, but I believe everyone needs to know the truth about where their decisions might lead, so I think it could be a good thing to share.

I really like reading most of your posts, so keep ‘em coming. :)

  3. I don’t think that the pictures that pro-life people use are fake. I’m sure it is not out of the question that it has ever happened, but I think this is common misconception.

    • @Selli – This is where I will have to agree to disagree with you. I do not believe the photos that are used by the majority of those protestors are actual real images at all. I think a lot of them are doctored, edited and of course faked completely.

  4. Just wanted to say thank you for your kind words. As you know, I can’t agree with you more!
