Catch Me on The Broad Side

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

A while back I had an offer from Joanne Bamburger AKA PunditMom, to join a great website called The Broad Side. With a little bit more time on my hands, and more interest in the topics than ever before, I decided to sign on at the end of last month.

The website is an amazing mix of women. Republicans, Democrats, conservative and liberal. Respective tones on issues we are all facing as women, and mothers.

It really is a refreshing site as a whole, and I am excited to be a part of such an amazing group of women. (more…)

Gabby’s Goal Was Gold… Not the Best Hair

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Yesterday when I heard of all the controversy surrounding Gabby Douglas’s hair, I needed to write something about it. As I sat down at my computer last night to rave about the gold metal winning young lady, I thought I may not be the best qualified person to articulate exactly what I wanted to say.

I asked one of my best friends, who I have known since childhood to write up a guest post, from the perspective of a single, childless African American woman. Monique Emery. is one frank, to the point, and doesn’t pull any punches and what she had to say hit the nail right on the head.

I hope you enjoy her take as much as I.

Oh, I see there is talk about Gabby’s hair? The critics must be black women. What else is new? Yeah I said it. Do somethin’!

I should be disgusted. I should be upset. But ladies and gentlemen, this is nothing new. This isn’t unheard of nor am I surprised. African American’s focusing on Gabby’s hair after she has won a gold medal for our country. I will ask all of my fellow African American women, are you surprised? (more…)

Stop The Victim Shaming

Victim Shaming:

Urban Dictionary describes it as:

When the victim of an event is blamed, or partially blamed, for their own attack. Mainly used in context with rape, domestic abuse, sexual harassment and sexual assault, but can be applied to other situations. It wrongly shifts blame from the guilty party onto the victim, and therefore doesn’t (or makes it more difficult to) punish the one truly at fault. The term was popularized by the SlutWalk movement, which started after a Canadian police officer advised female students to “avoid dressing like sluts” in order to avoid being victimized.

Now that we got the term explanation out of the way onto the reason I am even writing about it! (more…)

Women Are Not Free in America

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Since the candidates hit the campaign trail for this election last year, there is not a day that goes by that I am completely frightened of being a woman in America. But this last week has really shaken me up.

Birth control, education, options in childbirth, abortion — you name is and it is under attack. But there are still millions of Americans out of work when in November of 2010 the Republican leaders said their first priority is a jobs bill. We are still waiting.

Thankfully the battle over birth control is over — for now at least. And the leaders of our country will hopefully finally start working on an actual jobs bill but the candidates really don’t make me optimistic at all. Especially that retched and frightening Rick Santorum, and anyone who supports his out-of-date and out-of-touch views. (more…)

Michele Bachmann: The Case For Better Women in Politics

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Oh Michele!

How desperately I pray that the young women in our country start to take an interest in politics at a young age, and grow up to be positive, intelligent, and strong women because we are running low in this department lately.

Politics in our country is business as usual, but it seems like the more women that come into the spotlight, at least on the side of the GOP, the worse the reputation of women in politics becomes.First there is Hilary Clinton who I love. In 2008 I hoped and prayed she would win the democratic nomination for President. (more…)
