Poop on the Hands: You are Doing It All Wrong!

People never cease to amaze me with idiotic comments on cloth diapering, but recently I saw something -somewhere with step-by-step instructions on how to  change a cloth diaper without getting poop on your hands. Yes, I am serious.

I had to stop for a minute and think if there was much validity to the posting itself before I compared changing a disposable diaper and the difficulty of avoiding poop to actually changing a cloth diaper.

When I think of the differences between the two my last concern is actually the hazard of poop on the hands. Because if we are all being real here… if you are changing a diaper which contains crap — you have the chance that you can get it on your hands.

The fact that the diaper is re-usable and made of a cloth material doesn’t increase your risk.

If you are cloth diapering and getting crap all over your hands when you are changing a diaper… you are doing it all wrong.

First – You aren’t supposed to scoop the poop out of the diaper with your hands. If someone told you it was a hands on kind of job… they were pulling your leg!

Second – Give flushable wipes a try.  You can use the wipe to help remove most of the poop. Or of course you can always invest in a diaper sprayer.

Third – They don’t need to have every spec of poop out of them before they go in the wet bag… you are going to be washing them anyway.

But seriously… there is no special technique to changing a cloth diaper when compared to changing a disposable diaper. You really just do it the same thing.

  1. Do you realize that “share” slider on the left blocks text and makes your post difficult to read? It’s quite annoying.

Also, I get poop on my hands occasionally because my son’s BF poop sometimes goes from end to end of the diaper. But I would have touched that poop with a disposable too! In fact, with a disposable it probably would have gotten all up his back and over his clothes.

  2. Somehow full poopy diapers have been making it into my washing machine (I choose to blame my husband but since I sleep very little, it could just as well be something I am doing in my fog of survival) so I have had to fish turds out of the washer between cycles a few times this month. This is the only time I have ever had any legitimate concern about getting poo on my hands. But if it were a concern during diaper changes, let’s say your baby is less like an infant and more like a rabid wolverine – which would make diaper changes an adventure-, then maybe this person should just resign themselves to having poo hands and plan to always wash them immediately following a change. Poop isn’t really that terrible a thing and hand washing is good for you.
Also, I agree that the share toolbar is covering part of your text and it’s a little annoying. Since I have no coding knowledge whatsoever I cannot help you fix it and I’m sorry to complain without offering a solution. I’m viewing your blog in Firefox if that helps.

    • Thanks for the input on the sidebar ladies!
I will talk to my web lady to see if there is a quick remedy for it!

And Heather – I literally laughed HYSTERICALLY reading your comment… A rabid wolverine? LOL! Classic!

  3. I had LESS poo on my hands when I switched to cloth diapers. In fact, I had LESS poo on just about everything! We went from having weekly blow-outs in disposables, to never having a single one in cloth.

There should be a write up on what to do when your disposable diaper explodes and you have to clean poo out of every nook and cranny of a car seat. Let’s not even talk about having to disassemble the straps, so they could be cleaned. The post should end with something like, “Don’t let this happen to you…switch to cloth!”

I have to agree with Shannon… we were having more issues with the disposables. At first I was intimidated by using cloth at night, but after waking up wet a couple of times I thought what do I have to lose… we have not had any leaks since converting to nighttime cloth, and that includes poop.

    • Ya know after you guys talked about disposables having more blow outs… I ran out of “overnight” diapers yesterday since I need to wash a load and I had to use a disposable for overnight and what did we wake up to? A HUGE blowout… ALL up Addie’s back and into her PJ’s. It was HORRIBLE!

  5. I just want to say that I laughed at some of the comments about the cloth vs. disposable with the poops. I just made the switch to cd. A couple weeks ago before we got our first cd, my son had a HUGE blowout while my husband was holding him. I was busy cooking dinner and my husband screams for me. I come in the living room and my husband is screaming for wipes because somehow my husband touched his face and got poop all over his face! LMAO!!! It was the funniest thing ever, although my husband begged to differ! I think my husband will be glad to have the cloth diapers and not have to fear another poop! Seriously, my son has a blowout every other day it seems when wearing disposables. We just made the change so I haven’t noticed a huge difference yet. I have had one poopy diaper that I believe would have been a blowout if it wouldn’t have been in a cd, so I think we might have been saved!
