Homosexual Parents Are Just As Loving

According to a gentleman by the name of Bryan Fischer, who is also apparently a pretty famous radio host (sorry Bryan, never heard of ya) has suggested there be an “Underground railroad” to help save children from their own parents. Now before I get really into my opinion on it all, I am going to start off by explaining his original comments were in regard to a woman named Lisa Miller.

Boston.com explains the current court case:

Lisa Miller, no relation to the defendant, and Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven entered a civil union in Vermont in 2000. Lisa Miller gave birth to her daughter, Isabella, in 2002. The couple later broke up, and Lisa Miller returned to her native Virginia.

The two fought a five-year custody battle. After Lisa Miller refused to share custody, a judge transferred custody of the girl to Jenkins.

Now, these are two parents with equal parental rights to a child. They were married via civil union, and then decided as a couple to give birth. No different than any other family. Well Ms. Miller decided (with the “help” of her Pastor) to kidnap her daughter and flee the United States so she didn’t have to share custody. This my friend, is international kidnapping, and it is a very serious crime.

Not only is it a crime, but damn… why drag this poor little girl through this? Children should never be used as a way to get back at an ex. EVER!

But back to the comments of Mr. Fischer. Let me tell you what got under my skin first. The flippant use of the term underground railroad. Comparing kidnapping children from loving homes to slaves risking their lives to flee being owned and beaten by a slave owner, has to be one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard. There is no comparison, and there never will be.

Next, why do children need to be taken from loving same-sex households? Please let me know… I will wait!

Becauseyou may not agree with their lifestyle? Because you want to punish gay people? Because of your own personal hangups on their sexual orientation? None of this is a valid reason.

The Huffington Post reported, The Human Rights Campaign was quoted in saying:

“Fischer’s call for kidnapping children from same-sex partners is not only offensive, but a harmful mischaracterization of families that struggle daily to provide loving and safe home environments despite significant legal, financial and dignitary inequality,”

This is only one step in a nasty war though.

The rights of same-sex couples have been so under attack recently that we can only wonder what kind of world our own children will live in if we allow criminals like all those above to break the law in the name of religious freedom. There is a line that we cannot cross, especially when it comes to families… loving families!

Who is going to protect these families, and these children if our own government will not?

On to my last point…

I know many same-sex families. Couples in my children’s schools, my local community, and in the blogging world. The parents in these no different than my husband and myself. Loving parents who just want the best life for their children. In fact, in 2012 families come in all shapes and sizes. Same-sex is just another variation that is normal in our day-to-day lives now.

We are at an important crossroads for teaching our children in our current culture wars.

We can either teach our children acceptance… or we can teach them to be bigots.

  1. She was most likely a legal guardian or the judge would have not granted visitation and then full custody to her, after the mother fled with the child.

  2. Okay- so this just reminds me of the movie “not without my daughter” which reminds me of all the times my mom (from the age of 5) taught me how to dial collect and get a phone call through (among other things) in case my bio dad decided to skip town with me. That said, this guy is an idiot. You would never expect a child stuck in a heterosexual custody battle to need to be “rescued” in the way he suggests. Ugggh

  3. That statement is beyond offensive. I really don’t understand how a person’s sexual orientation has any affect on their ability to parent? In my experience, it seems like same-sex parents are if anything more devoted as they have to struggle more to have children.

  4. Ugh we have more important things to save our children from – things that are actually harmful.

  5. It’s incredibly important to see that media have a responsibility to focus the conversation on the real issue – the wellbeing of the child, and not the sensationalist non-issue of same sex couples. Thank you for a great post!

  6. I hadn’t heard about this, ughhhh. Some people… I just don’t understand.

All I can say is “wow” – I hadn’t heard about this. Makes me sick to my stomach that this kind of prejudice and hatred is still, so very publicly, out there. Thank you for writing such a great post.

  8. it’s so hard to comment on extreme prejudice. no words will change their opinions. UGH

  9. I cannot even believe that comment about the Underground Railroad. Just horrific in so many ways. You made great points here and said it so well, thank you.

And thanks for linking up today!
