10 Classic Books Your Kids Should Read

Reading as to be one of the most important parts of childhood. At least in my opinion.
Every night I read to the boys before bed. If it is a short story, or a longer book – I let them pick something out and it is part of our bedtime routine. In fact many of our family members buy the kids books as gifts because we all really feel reading is important.
My love for reading started as a child with my father. Every night before bed my father would read to me. Whether it was a book I took out of the school library that week, or as I got older we would take turns back and forth reading novels like the Narnia collection, or The Lord of the Rings series.
It was something I always looked forward to. And I can tell my kids look forward to our books at the end of the day.
I know there are a lot of parents out there who are on the same page as us. And feel reading is really important, but most studies on reading in children show how truly important it is from birth.
In fact one study from the National Commission on Reading states:
“The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school.”
Big deal right?
I think so!
When I was thinking of the whole topic of reading to kids, I started to think about all the classics we love, and books I loved as a kid that I see my children enjoying decades later… and I am sure most of you will also agree with the list!
If you have any that are not on the list, please comment below to include them into the mix!

I read all of these as a kid except “The Mitten.” I may have to go read that one for good measure
I greatly feel that my parents reading to me introduced me to being a bookworm as I grew up.
The Gorilla Did It by Barbara Shook Hazen (if you can find it) is awesome. Dimity Duck by Jane Yolen, and maybe Go Dog Go are also excellent. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss is a favorite around here, and recently we love Ladybug Girl by Jacky Davis and David Soman. Plus the magazine Wild Animal Baby was great too.
